New VOLCAT Event Dashboard Configuration Options

The VOLCAT Event Dashboard (https://volcano.ssec.wisc.edu/event-dashboard/) was developed to facilitate more timely uptake of VOLCAT alerts. Feedback from end-users was very favorable and one common theme for future improvement was for more granular volcano filters that gives users more control over which volcanoes will appear on the user’s instance of the Event Dashboard, should an event be detected. The previous version allowed users to filter by VAAC region. The latest version, which is now available at https://volcano.ssec.wisc.edu/event-dashboard/, allows users to refine volcano selections as a function of VAAC region. Below is an illustration of how to use the new Event Dashboard configuration options.

To access the user configuration options, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Event Dashboard main display (highlighted by the cyan arrow in the screenshot below).

After clicking the gear icon, the configuration page will appear with three buttons at the top the configuration page: VAAC Regions, Restore Hidden Events, and Time Threshold. The “Restore Hidden Events” and “Time Threshold” functionality is unchanged, only the “VAAC Region” filtering functionality has changed. The screenshot below shows the VAAC region filtering options that appear after clicking on the “VAAC Regions” button.

Users can still select or unselect VAAC regions, similar to the original filtering mechanism. In addition, clicking on the “up arrow” button to the right of the VAAC region name will display each volcano in that VAAC region (see image below). With all of the volcanoes for a given VAAC region displayed, users can fine tune their volcano selections as needed. We advise users to use the individual volcano filtering specifically for: turning off long inactive volcanoes that are commonly associated with false alerts or for adding a small number of volcanoes from a secondary VAAC region of interest.

Lastly, clicking on the “up arrow” next to a given volcano reveals the option to unselect a given event type for that volcano (see image below). In general, we advise against unselecting an event type unless there is a persistent false alarm issue at a given volcano.

Additional filtering options may be added to the Event Dashboard in the future. Some possible future filtering options include, volcanic region, country, SIGMET region, etc.
