JPSS Product Statement

This document serves to outline differences between experimental JPSS Volcanic Ash products available on this website versus the operational JPSS volcanic ash products available through the JPSS Ground System.

All JPSS products contained within this website, including sector imagery and alerts, are being generated by the experimental NOAA/CIMSS VOLCAT system. (See: publications SECO Part 1 and SECO Part 2). The experimental VOLCAT system leverages years of science advances and more fully utilizes the observations provided by JPSS for the purpose of volcanic ash detection and physical property retrievals. The operational products available from the JPSS ground system are NOT available on this website. More scientific information regarding the operational JPSS products is available in the publication here. Users should NOT expect matching results between the experimental JPSS VOLCAT results and operational JPSS ground system results.

Disclaimer: The NOAA/CIMSS Volcanic Cloud Monitoring website is hosted and populated at the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin. While reliability is quite high, outages, including unannounced outages, will occasionally occur. Outages may include, but are not limited to, any of the following: website offline, specific sensor processing to cease, email and/or text message distribution outages, database outages, computer malfunction, etc. While every effort is made to correct problems as soon as they arise, the SSEC is not staffed 24/7.
